R.I.D.E.

Reducing Individual Driving for the Environment

Snowbird and Powdr were looking to change the game when it came to reducing carbon emissions while at the same time offering a simple, elegant service that allowed people to utilize technology to carpool to a single destination. Within this service, we envisioned a rewards system to incentivize users to make this app a staple of their morning routines when getting to Snowbird or their favorite resort.

Welcome to R.I.D.E. 101

Before you even get to the profile / landing screen, an overview of the R.I.D.E. initiative and the benefits of using it (rewards!) are shown. This allows you a quick and simple way to educate users and eliminate confusion and questions if you were to just simply drop them into the app experience for the first time.

NATIVE APPLICATIONS

In addition to a truly responsive site, there was also an emphasis on creating a native application for iOS (with Android to follow) that would highlight your travel itinerary as well as upgrades and add-ons.

While this initiative is still ongoing, there’s been plenty of UX and design exploration to find the right balance between what’s already offered on the web and a more tailored and customizable experience natively.

Streamlining the First Impression

While R.I.D.E. hosts many features, the current primary user focus and is the creation and sharing of a ride itself. This page serves as both a user profile and the entry point of that main user flow. Therefore it’s vastly important to have a clear hierarchy for calls to action, as well as any important data about the user and their friends.

Behind the Curtain

While there is hardly ever a need to envision and design out every screen within a flow, a large number were built out to demonstrate the various functions of the app itself. These include everything from the creation of a R.I.D.E. to the redemption of a reward given to those who successfully complete various R.I.D.E.-based challenges.

Modular in Mind

When the time came for this app to move from the initial design concept phase to the actual design and development phase, it was important to keep in mind that in the future other resorts might want to utilize what R.I.D.E. had to offer. This is why the foundation of the app was structured with that utility in mind. Other resorts and locations would be able to plug their branding among other things into the app to build out a personalized and familiar experience for their users.

Conclusion

While still in the final testing stages, this app marks an incredible step forward for mountain-bound people looking to do their part to help the environment. Not only will users be able to access easy to find carpool options up to their destination, but by doing so will be rewarded in a variety of ways.
